Looking for Portuguese classes for children or adults? Check out some options below!
Note: Most of the resources below are specific to Massachusetts.
K–12 dual-language public schools
Did you know some public schools in Massachusetts have dual-language or immersion programs?
The Massachusetts Department of Education website lists dual-language programs. At the bottom of their page, there is a link with the list of schools and programs. As of May 2026, this is the document listing 10 Portuguese dual-language programs in Brockton, Cambridge, Everett, Framingham and Hudson. Most of these programs have been established already, and some are expected for 2026.
If you live in a different city or town, you can express your interest in such programs to your City Hall and to the Massachusetts Department of Education.
Private learning
While I do not personally know any places to recommend, I found at least one that offers bilingual Portuguese immersion programs. Note: while they have great online resources and reviews, this is not a personal endorsement.
Marcela Vitor Learning Center in Peabody, MA offers programs for infants, preschoolers, and children up to 8 years old. They also have a Saturday Portuguese club.
Community centers
Community centers such as Arlington Community Education occasionally offer introductory Portuguese language classes.
Language schools
Several language schools offer Portuguese courses online and in person, such as Rola Languages in Cambridge and BASE – Boston Area Spanish Exchange (yes, they offer classes in languages other than Spanish!).
Some schools will have materials for a specific variant of Portuguese. For example, the Portuguese School in Cambridge & Somerville offers classes in European Portuguese.
Please note: while these schools have great online resources and reviews, this is not a personal endorsement.
Universities
Many local universities have Portuguese programs. For example:
- Department of Portuguese | UMass Dartmouth
- Spanish and Portuguese Studies | UMass Amherst
- Saab Center for Portuguese Studies | UMass Lowell
- Portuguese Studies | MIT
- Undergraduate concentration – Portuguese and Brazilian Studies | Harvard University
- PhD – Portuguese & Luso-Brazilian | Harvard University
- Portuguese & Brazilian Cultural Studies | Boston University
- Portuguese – World Languages and Cultures Department | Northeastern University
- Portuguese courses | Cape Cod Community College
